Would You Buy A Second Hand Helmet?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Drinky, Sep 3, 2016.

  1. Ok 200mph

  2. I change mine every 4-5 years.

  4. If I wouldn't buy a 160mph bike second hand, why would I buy a 200mph one?! My 848 and 959 were both brand new, and I must admit failure of an older bike does influence my buying. Just look at the 1199 with the collapsed rear suspension in another thread (not the first I've seen).... Makes you think. If you have the option, but new. Same with helmets.

Regarding the 5yr helmet thing, it was based on some research (by Snell) years ago, and during their testing some of the ones never used and kept in the dark aged just as badly as ones exposed to the elements and worn every day... There is no hard and fast rule and a helmet that looks good may have become brittle and not do what it is supposed to in an accident. That said, it is more likely to be 10-15 years before you have to worry about it, because Snell just picked a safe number based on the worst of all of their results (they still test old helmets, and plenty of 20+ year old ones are fine).

  5. I bought s/h Shark. £320 lid for £75. Mint condition used twice.

  6. i wouldnt buy a second hand helmet just because of the thought of someone else having their sweaty head in there for long periods of time

  7. I know the amount I've sweat at points in mine, couple that with someone else's breath and that's far to close to another man than I ever want to get.
    Might as well go cottaging.

  9. I understand from a warranty point, but not because it might explode.

  10. I might be niave, but I would expect someone with an expensive lid would look after it. Unless it's been up the road.
My problem is that I find used prices are so close to the new price, I just wait and buy new.
Which I'm doing now, my shark needs replaced.

  11. If your after a Shark 'just like' the one pictured its yours for £200 which is over £300 below new. I can certainly confirm its been well looked after, never dropped etc and always stored in a padded helmet bag.

  12. I'm not sure what I want Drinky, and in all honesty, I've spend a bit on the bike recently so I'm kind of broke, but thank you for the offer.

  13. This isn't the first 1199 I have seen with collapsed rear suspension, and in most cases with the second owner due to the time it has taken for the over stressing to take its toll....

  14. Holy shit. Don't mean to jump on the thread, but what part is breaking?

  15. I think there has been a recall on a bolt somewhere in the rear shock assembly that has failed (only based on what I have read in posts following the failures I have seen).

  17. Second hand helmets bought and sold, don't have an issue with it as long as mint.

  18. The problem is you don't know. The condemned one I sold was having the chip filled/repainted. How would you know unless someone told you.... In my experience, eBay isn't a hotbed of honesty...

  19. I guess that's a personnel thing I'm comfortable with a second hand helmet if I've inspected it.
I cant see why they would have condemned a helmet for having a chipped bit of paint, having crashed a quality helmet at over a ton and seen how it held up all I can say is a chip wouldn't bother me .

  20. I can't be the only one who has gone into a bike shop, tried on some lids and seen another person drop it onto the floor from at least 3 or 4 feet? When I did see this, the bloke put it back in the display case and left. I told the sales bloke on my way out but honestly, I would have no way of knowing if that brand new helmet was condemned and binned or ignored to be sold to some poor unsuspecting bloke looking for a brand new expensive helmet
