Spokes are flat faced. They are mags. When did Marchesini start forging them? Trying to get a ball park idea of how old they are.
I wouldn’t read too much into the sticker on the rim, that is quite modern. Most of that style of mag alloy wheel tends to be from the 1990’s. Andy
I thought the same. That perhaps the wheels were refinished gloss black at some point and these decals were applied. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to go back to the stock speedo drive with these race Ohlins. The previous owner had an aftermarket electronic speedo. Will I have to fab something for the bottom of the left fork leg to keep the drive unit from rotating? Or will the cable and just the fact the axle keeps everything snug be enough?
Couple of considerations for you - it looks to me like the rear wheel is a big hub and the front wheel is probably race, maybe wide track. For starter, that will not fit on your bike. Some people made an adapter spacer for big hub to road axle back in the days but you are better getting road wheels. As for the front, if it is race size, front discs won't fit, you need race discs and race discs only are narrow band, meaning that you need the corresponding race calipers. If you are in 65mm mounts, almost no race calipers exist in that mount and Brembos are 40mm axial or radial, so you need fork bottoms (and replacements are getting rare now)... and there is all starts (did I also mention that the speedo drive won't fit and a need for digital dash....) So, what maybe cheap wheels might not be a cheap fitting... As for Mag wheels, you will not be able to tell without a professional checking them over. Buy them for whatever you are comfortable to throw away if the wheels are no good. Send them to Steve Turner, he does a chemical stripping and then uses some colouring to see hairline cracks that you would not notice otherwise. I have had a lot of wheels done over the years with him and also yokes, swingarms, etc. Service is spot on and you have peace of mind. The gunmetal finish is awesome as well.
Thanks Phil. I'm in Canada, so might be a bit too pricey to send them to Steve! I'm going to pass on these for a few reasons, but appreciate your input.
